What you'll get
- Every alert in the channel: problems, warnings, recoveries and acknowledgements, each as a coloured embed naming the host, the check and what it said, with a link to the host in Gryphon.
- No surprise pings. Gryphon's posts never mention anybody, whatever a host name or a
check's message happens to say, so an
@everyonein an error cannot wake the whole server. - The same alerts everyone else gets, by the same rules, on every plan, for every host or only the hosts you choose.
Before you start
- A Discord server where you may manage webhooks (the Manage Webhooks permission).
- In Gryphon, the owner of the account, or a member the owner has allowed to change hosts.
Steps
1Create a webhook in Discord
- Open Server Settings, then Integrations, and choose Create Webhook (or Webhooks, then New Webhook).
- Name it
Gryphonand choose the channel the alerts should go to. - Choose Copy Webhook URL. It starts with
https://discord.com/api/webhooks/.
The URL is the key. Anyone who has it can post to that channel. Paste it into Gryphon and nowhere else; Gryphon keeps it encrypted and never shows it again in full.
2Add it in Gryphon
On the dashboard, open Integrations and choose Discord. In the iPhone app it is in the account menu; on Android, under Settings.
- Name
- #alerts
- Discord webhook URL
- https://discord.com/api/webhooks/…
- What it sends
- Problems, Warnings, Recoveries, Acknowledgements
- Which hosts
- Every host, or only the hosts you choose
3Send a test
Press Test on the integration. An embed titled Test from Gryphon appears in the channel, and Gryphon shows what Discord answered.
Test it
- The test embed arrives in the channel.
- Stop something Gryphon watches, such as a staging site. The problem is posted when Gryphon confirms it, and the recovery when it comes back.
If it stops working
A deleted webhook answers Unknown Webhook. Gryphon marks the integration
Failing with that answer and emails the people who manage the account once. After a week with
no successful delivery it pauses the integration and says so. Make a new webhook, paste it in and save.
Discord limits how fast one webhook may post. When a big outage sends many alerts at once, Gryphon waits out the pause Discord asks for and tries again, so a burst arrives a little spread out.
